Nought to Five is for all parents from all walks of life. It's an insiders' guide to parenting the under-fives, which screened on TVNZ in the later half of 2006.
The ten half hour episodes run in consecutive order from brand new baby through to almost-5-year-olds who're ready for school.
Each episode features two families sharing their stories about everyday life - sleeping, eating, asserting independence, toilet training, non-compliance and so on.
They talk to a family counsellor who has experience and advice not only from being a parent themselves, but also through their line of work.
In each episode Gill Connell, a primary school teacher, author and advisor to SPARC on Active Movement, discusses the all-important link between movement and learning. She shows the families activities, which will grow their children's brains so that they can attain their genetic potential.
The ethos of the programme is what's normal for every age and stage. If parents know what to expect from their children and why certain behaviour occurs, they can celebrate and enhance the stages in their children's lives rather than being frustrated and exhausted by it.
The series has a line-up of five counsellors who share the latest research and thinking about issues at each developmental stage with the families, then offer strategies and tips designed to keep everyone's dignity intact. Producer Jude Dobson says, "Some of our parents are experts in their own right. Just as in real life you learn a lot of great stuff from parents at the kindy or school gate, so too do you learn great stuff from our parents in the series".
Nought to Five deals with the everyday stuff that most parents will face. Jude continues, "Co-producer Jan McIntosh and I didn't want to make a 'good kid goes bad' sort of series. I feel those sort of programmes are voyeuristic. We wanted to show the everyday stuff - why it happens and what you can do about it, before things snowball and get on top of you". She continues, " a cornerstone of this series is respect for the child - they are on the journey with us - parenting is not something we do to them as such, we do it with them, and this series is about creating a positive, harmonious journey for both parent and child".
